Decision No. 450-W-2011

December 29, 2011

APPLICATION by Sydney Ports Corporation, pursuant to the Coasting Trade Act, S.C., 1992, c. 31, for a licence.

File No.:

Sydney Ports Corporation applied, through its representative, for a licence to use the “ORANJE”, a trailing suction hopper dredge from Cyprus, to undertake dredging work in Sydney Harbour, Nova Scotia, commencing January 1 and ending April 30, 2012.

Is there a suitable Canadian ship available to perform the activity?

Canadian Transportation Agency (Agency) staff gave notice of the application to the Canadian marine industry.

Ocean Group Inc. filed an objection and Harbour Development, a Division of Atlantic Towing Limited, offered ships to perform the activity. Both have since withdrawn their submissions.

No other Canadian ships were offered, therefore, the Agency determines that there is no suitable Canadian ship available to perform the activity.

The Agency is providing this determination to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to consider whether to issue the licence. This Decision is not an authority to operate.
