Determination No. W-2018-178

August 1, 2018

APPLICATION by Baffinland Iron Mines LP, pursuant to the Coasting Trade Act, S.C., 1992, c. 31, for a licence.

Case number:
18-03973

Baffinland Iron Mines LP applied, through its representative, for a licence to use the "BOTNICA", an ice management and multipurpose support ship registered in Estonia, to assist and escort bulk carriers that will be accessing the Mary River mine in Milne Inlet, Nunavut to either resupply ships or export iron ore from open water to the terminal area. The ship will also be equipped and ready as an emergency response platform for any incident in the local area. The activity will start on August 4, 2018 and will end on August 11, 2018.

Is there a suitable Canadian ship available to perform the activity?

Canadian Transportation Agency (Agency) staff gave notice of the application to the Canadian marine industry and no Canadian ships were offered. Therefore, the Agency determines that there is no suitable Canadian ship available to perform the activity.

The Agency is providing this Determination to the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness to consider whether to issue the licence. This Determination is not an authority to operate.
