Training for transportation service providers on how to assist persons with disabilities

Most federal transportation service providers, terminal operators, CATSA, and CBSA are required to train their staff and contracted personnel on how to assist persons with disabilities.

The requirements related to training are set out in the Personnel Training for the Assistance of Persons with Disabilities Regulations (PTR) and the Canadian Transportation Agency's codes of practice.

Large transportation service providers are subject to training requirements set out in the Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Regulations (ATPDR), which include training on human rights principles, providing physical assistance, handling mobility aids and special equipment, and a requirement to consult persons with disabilities in the development of their training programs.

Transportation service providers can consider using the CTA's Accessibility for All program as a resource in training their staff. This program consists of modules designed to help transportation service providers in meeting their obligations. Transportation service providers are, however, required to take other steps to meet their obligations, including training about the various types of barriers encountered by persons with disabilities and how to use special equipment.
